Malta Mountain Running and Trail (MMTR) is an affiliated, independent body to Athletics Malta & World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) under the name of Malta Mountain Running sub-committee, with the rights of organising National Championships, National Team selection & overseeing development of Mountain & Trail running in Malta.

History

August 2012: The Malta Mountain Running Association (MMRA) was formed (President – Gerald Grech)
September 2012: National team took part for the first time in the 28th World Mountain Running Championships in Ponte di Legno, Italy organized by WMRA under the auspices of IAAF.
October 2012: Historic agreement was reached between WMRA president – Bruno Gozellino, IAAF representative – Pierre Weiss, European Athletics President – Hans – Jorg Wirz, MAAA President – Anthony Chircop and MMRA president – Gerald Grech. The agreement recognised MMRA as an affiliated, independent body to MAAA and WMRA, under the name of Malta Mountain Running sub-committee MMTR – with the rights of organizing the National Championships, National Team selection and overseeing development of mountain and trail running in Malta
June 2013: First National Mountain Running Championships held in Bingemma (5km). This is now a yearly event (5.6km) taking place in May every year.
July 2013: National team took part for the first time in the 28th European Mountain Running Championships in Borovets, Bulgaria.
2013 – 2019: The Malta National Team has without fail, taken part in both the European Mountain Running Championships and World Mountain Running championships which are held yearly as well as several Mountain Running World Cup races and other international competitions.
2018. Following the decision of World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) to enter in a partnership with IAAF, Trail Runnings International (ITRA) and the International Association (IAU) to hold the first ever combined event in 2021, MMTR is now co-ordinating Mountain/trail running, sky-running and ultra-distance running on a national level.
