Affiliations

MMTR is an affiliated, independent body to Athletics Malta (AM) & World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), European Athletics and World Athletics under the name of Malta Mountain Running sub-committee, with the rights of organising National Championships, National Team selection & overseeing development of Mountain&Trail running in Malta.

Athletics Malta

Athletics Malta strives to unite athletes of every level of interest and ability, promoting a healthy and inclusive lifestyle through the sport of athletics and running, while enhancing the quality of life in our community. It is affiliated with World Athletics, European Athletics and the Maltese Olympic Committee; it is also registered with Sport Malta and the Commissioner.

World Mountain Running Association

In 1984 the World Mountain Running Association (formerly called ICMR) was formed with Angelo Biasi as President.  Since that time annual International competitions have been held to test the World’s best mountain runners both seniors and junior (U20) runners.  From 1985 until 2008 as a World Trophy and since that time as an official World Championships recognised and held under the jurisdiction of the IAAF.

Today the WMRA also holds competitions for Masters/Veteran runners as well as Under 18 year old runners.  A World Cup of Mountain Running is held as well as the Long Distance Mountain Running Championships.

Starting in 2021 in partnership with the IAAF, Trail Runnings International Association (ITRA) and the International Association of Ultra Running (IAU) a combined World Championships will be held signalling a new era for the WMRA and a desire to bring the sports many disciplines together.  The WMRA has a goal of promoting running competitions and athletic performance for all ages and abilities in places of natural beauty giving people fantastic memorable experiences.
