Gerald started his running career at the the age of 15, excelling in the 200m/400m events and later in middle distance being the 5th fastest 800m  Maltese runner of all time (1’54″76). He represented Malta in several important international competitions including Youth Olympics, University Games, Small Nations Games and European Team Championships. Under the careful guidance of his coach Ivan Rozhnov, he then went on to place 1st Maltese and 2nd overall in the Malta International Half Marathon in 2011. In 2012 he helped establish Malta Mountain Running sub-committee and since then he has been actively involved in the International Mountain Running scene.
