Top Maltese mountain runners in action at the 35th World Mountain Running Championships in Patagonia, Argentina

Recently a selection of top mountain runners represented Malta in the 35th World Mountain Running Championships in Villa La Angostura, Argentina.

The Senior Men’s race consisted of a challenging uphill and downhill, wet and muddy course from the town of Villa la Angostura at 800m asl to amazing scenic views of the Lago Nahuel-Huapi at 1400m covering a total distance of 14km.

Simon Spiteri, 2nd in the National Mountain Running Championships this year, proved himself on this challenging course coming in first Maltese runner. Ryan Farrugia, winner of the 2019 National Trail Running League was second Maltese runner in. Gerald Grech, back from a 2year absence due to injury, 2nd in this year’s National Trail Running League completed the Malta team. The Malta trio, beat athletes from Monaco , Ireland  Bulgaria  Uruguay  Bolivia  and Japan . 

In the women’s race, running on the same challenging course, MonaLisa Camilleri, national steeplechase record holder, registered another creditable performance beating representatives from 3 established mountain running nations including Australia  Ecuador  and Bolivia .
